The Deeper Rock - An Introduction

The Deeper Rock
Because Sunday just isn’t enough!

The deeper rock is a series of articles and videos from rock church in Fargo North Dakota. We are a church that endeavors to do all that we can to make it as easy as possible for anybody to come to church. When you first walk into the church, you someone greets you, who on a good day is still wearing their biker letters. As you look to your right, you see a table with a big sign that says free stuff. On that table, you can find all kinds of books, Bibles, CDs and whatever else happens to be there that day. Then, you won’t be able to help but to smell the Starbucks coffee. The reality is I (Pastor Scott) make it strong because I want you to stay awake during the preaching. And yes, we have fresh donuts. But, I think we may be the only church in the Fargo, Moorhead area where not only can you get free donuts but also free popcorn. That’s because we meet at West Acres Cinema. The movie theater is so good to us that they give us free popcorn to serve to our church people. You’ll notice that the music is playful in a way you may not be accustomed to in a church.

The service is only one hour long. If you walk with God was like driving a car, on Sundays, I will endeavor to tell you where to drive but not how the car works or even, sometimes, why. That is where the deeper rock comes in.

You see, the Bible is like the ocean. You can look at it and have respect for it. You can even reap some of the benefits for it when somebody else goes out and faces for you and brings in the catch. But you can also walk up and walk in up to your ankles and enjoy its refreshing. After a while, you want more. So you walk in up to your knees, and then your waist and your chest. As time goes on, you realize that there’s, even more, You will have. You see other people who are putting on a snorkel and mask and diving down 10 or 12 feet. No matter how long you live, you can never explore the entire ocean or hope to unlock the secrets of its deepest depths. The Bible like the ocean is accessible to everybody no matter who you are. It can be a blessing to you in proportion to how deep you go. You can hear somebody else talk about the Bible and it will be a blessing to you. Or you can dive down into its depths for yourself and garner untold, unimaginable riches.

The format that I am going to use for the “deeper rock” is to model for you how to dig into the Scripture. The endgame here is not for me to spoon feed you deeper things. Though, I hope that happens. The endgame is to teach you to dig into the Scripture for yourself. I will endeavor to model for you the inductive Bible study method. I will unpack what the inductive Bible study method is in a later video and article. A quick snapshot is this:

·       The Scripture is the inspired word of God
  • ·       who
  • ·       what
  • ·       when
  • ·       where
  • ·       why
  • ·       how

I am a fundamental Christian who believes that the Bible is the infallible, Almighty, absolute word of God. I believe it is inspired in its original language, original context, and its original intent. The Bible is unchanging as it progresses through the centuries. In these modern times, we must look at it in its entirety and go through the work to dig down deep and understand what God was saying then. He is the same God and does not change his opinions.

I love the Scripture and have studied it my whole life. That said, I am not a theologian with a lot of “doctors” by my name. What may make me unique from other Bible teachers is that getting as many people to heaven as possible consumes me. So the application is not going to be the first goal of the deeper rock. Because of who I am, as a pastor who loves people and once as many as possible in heaven, we will often take a shortcut to the cross. Because ultimately, anything that I do with my time and energy that does not yield a higher population in heaven, is not worth my time.

May the Lord richly bless you, and I hope to see you in church on Sunday.
